The Dog Rescue Holidays Project
Here at Dog Rescue Holidays in the beautiful Sierra de Grazalema, Cádiz, Spain, we rescue dogs from the streets and home them in our “doggie half-way house” where we care for, socialise and rehabilitate them.
The area we live in is absolutely beautiful and peaceful but there’s one, major blight on the cultural landscape, and that is dog abandonment. We have a houseful ourselves, all picked up off the streets, but instead of just complaining about it we’ve rolled our sleeves up and got stuck in with this project to bring people out to enjoy the area, while looking after a few beautiful creatures who have been let down by their former owners, during their stay.
Visitors have a three-bedroom house with patio (and dogs, of course) to themselves and they can do whatever they wish in the sierra, which happens to be perfect for outdoor activities or just relaxing. We also pick you up from either Seville or Jerez airports and, of course, drop you off again so there’s no worry about transfers.
Typically we find that our visitors comprise a small group of a few friends who come out to enjoy the holiday and to help some unfortunate canine chums. This means that if, for example, three people come out to visit and help, each person pays just over 80 euros for a week-long break in sunny Andalusia as the house costs 250 euros for the week with no hidden extras, which in turn covers our costs for dog food, vet treatments and transport of all the dogs we take in.
It’s a win-win situation because guests get an amazing holiday in an undiscovered part of Spain, the dogs get lots of attention and help in getting them back on the right path to being permanently rehomed and we get some much-needed help with looking after our furry chums and visitors also help in covering our overheads for the essential purchases that dog rescue entails.
These photos show what’s in store for visitors to Dog Rescue Holidays.
Hi Rose,
Prices are 100 euros for the week per person (accommodation and transport for the week) and we have pictures up of the 3 bedroomed house that visitors have to themselves on our latest blog post (I’m new to the blogging world and need to make it a bit more user-friendly; just click on the header and it’s the post that comes up at the top of the page).
Thanks!
Yes Marcia, Getting children involved in any capacity is a good thing as we’re hoping to raise awareness amongst local youngsters concerning animal welfare and seeing foreign children getting involved can only be a good thing! Thanks.
This is wonderful scheme! I’ve commented elsewhere, but just thought you might like to see photos of the beautiful podenco, Zorro, my first rescue in Spain. He was rehomed, thanks to Beryl of Galgo News and Podenco Post, first to Bev and Warren for traing and socialisation, then with an English couple in Benidorm. Here he is: http://s1052.photobucket.com/user/2pa2pa/library/Zorro%20el%20Podenco?sort=2&page=1
Cheers! Zorro is a beauty, for sure!
Hi Denise, like many things with people involved, we’ve had to shelve the project. We’ll hopefully be able to start something up again soon. Sorry
Hi again Denise, we couldn’t keep away from this project as the issue of dog abandonment is getting worse down here. Keep checking in here and on our Facebook page as we’re up and running again. Cheers
Amazing work if I hadn’t got two rescue dogs myself I certainly would be on the next plane over.
Thanks a lot!! And great that you have a couple of rescue dogs, too;-)
